BEER PRODUCTION STAFF

JOB PURPOSE:

The Beer Production Staff job will focus on being an integral part of the Beer Production Team in all aspects of producing world-class beer of exceptional quality. The role primarily entails all aspects of wort production, cellaring beer, packaging beer, cleaning/sanitizing brewery equipment, keg washing, aiding with logistics of kegged and packaged beer between our locations, supporting other company departments as needed, and any other tasks as assigned that management deems necessary to ensure successful brewery operations. At times, this job may also be required to support onsite and offsite brewery events and other promotions. The role requires strong multitasking skills in a team-oriented environment. Tasks outlined within this job description are not solely the individual's responsibility generally speaking but, at times, may be assigned to the job as a sole responsibility for a scheduled shift.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete all fundamental functions of the brewing process according to the brewing schedule.
  • Production of 15BBL & 30BBL batches of beer.
  • Preparation of brewing ingredients, including malt, hops, and yeast.
  • Monitoring fermentation activity, disposal of yeast, and disposal of spent hops.
  • Monitoring quality, flavor, and carbonation of beers.
  • Assist with raw material inventory, including malt, hops, adjuncts, and yeast.
  • Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of the canning line. 
  • Follow standard operating procedures and directives of the Brewery Management concerning brewing operations.
  • Follow Beer Production Task Schedule

SAFETY AND OPERATIONAL PROTOCOLS:

  • Follow standard operating procedures and directives in safety and general brewery operational protocols; manufacturing operations; quality control; cellaring; packaging; and material handling.
  • Complete all required training and have complete knowledge of any standard operating procedures for all job duties and responsibilities.
  • Work with other team members to constantly innovate and improve our safety record, beer quality, and operating efficiency.

DAY-TO-DAY BREWERY OPERATIONS & TASKS:

The following outline of tasks relating to cleaning/sanitization, wort production, cellaring, packaging, and other miscellaneous duties will be assigned to various beer production team members during their regularly scheduled shifts. It is not the expectation that any given team member will do all of these tasks during a given shift, but rather that the team will collectively work on completing these tasks.

BREWING TEAM CLEANING/SANITIZATION TASKS:

  • Daily
        • Maintain cleanliness of brewery equipment and area during the course of brewing and cellaring processes.
        • CIP and Sanitation of fermentation vessels, yeast brinks, brewery hoses, mash tun, and brew kettle.
        • Maintain clean floors under brewhouse and all vessels within the cellar and walk-in cooler.
        • Clean and organize brewery parts, clamps, and gaskets, and ensure proper cleaning and sanitization during use.
        • Keep a clean and organized workspace in all areas of the facility.
        • Clean brew sink and tops of mash tun and brew kettle.
        • Rinse tops of tanks after all dry hops.
        • Rinse CBox.
  • Weekly
        • Wash and sanitize kegs according to standard operating procedures.
        • CIP, Sanitize, and CO2 purge serving vessels.
        • CIP Mash Tun.
        • Scrub floors as needed.
        • Sweep basement malt area and mill room.
        • Organize malt staging area as needed for receiving pallets.
        • Scrub sidewalk area as needed to remove spent grain runoff.
        • Maintain cleanliness of canning line, labeler, and depalletizer.
        • Alkaline clean can piercer and CBox.
  • Monthly
      • Power wash tile in cellar under fermentation vessels as needed.
      • Scrub behind and underneath brewhouse.
      • Clean floor drains and drain covers.
      • Scrub, mop, and sweep the basement area as needed.
      • Deep clean canning line.

    BREWING TEAM CELLARING TASKS:

    • Operate all cellar equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Maintain yeast harvest and disposal as per standard operating procedures.
    • Recirculate dry hops in fermentation vessels per standard operating procedures.
    • Transfer of finished beer from fermentation tanks to kegs and/or serving tanks.
    • Dry hopping and disposal of spent hops as per standard operating procedures.
    • Carbonate finished beer per formula specifications.
    • Complete all necessary paperwork and computer work accurately and on time.
    • Maintain inventory as needed, and report low inventory levels to Lead Brewer and other Brewery management.

    BREWING TEAM WORT PRODUCTION TASKS:

    • Milling grain and preparing other raw materials for brewing.
    • Wort production, gathering and organizing hops and other ingredients as needed.
    • Grain out and assist in moving spent grain drums as needed.

    BREWING TEAM PACKAGING TASKS:

    • Setup and breakdown of canning machine, pressure labeler, and depalletizer.
    • Prepare hot stamp date coder for canning run.
    • Load depalletizer with brite cans, pack out filled cans into case trays, apply paktechs, and stock Cold Box with new inventory on canning days.  
    • Organize keg and can inventory in Cold Box as needed.
    • Help clean taproom floors and reset furniture after canning runs.
    • Bottling and labeling of limited-release beers.

    OTHER DUTIES AS NEEDED:

    • Assist other departments as necessary.
    • Transport full kegs and cases of packaged beer to our other locations and return empty kegs.
    • Occasionally participate and represent the brewery at various tastings, festivals, and/or beer events, both on-site and off-site, as needed.
    • Unloading raw materials during deliveries and then moving them into inventory space.
    • Oak barrel transportation, including loading and off-loading.
    • As needed, assist with beer delivery to accounts and/or local residences (kegs and cases).

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Possess a valid driver’s license.
    • Possess a high school diploma, some college preferred.
    • Flexible schedule with availability to work early mornings and weekends.
    • Prior work experience with brewing and/or home-brewing experience, formal brewing education is preferred.
    • Possess working knowledge of beer and the craft beer industry.
    • Possess exceptional work ethic, organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to multitask efficiently, and keep accurate records.
    • Possess basic troubleshooting skills applicable to a brewing and manufacturing setting.
    • Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively with all staff.
    • Possess understanding of ABC laws that pertain to breweries.
    • Possess awareness of local, state, and federal health and sanitation laws.
    • Able to lift heavy objects (25 – 55 lbs.) on a continual basis to shoulder height. Able to transport up to 160 lbs. (full kegs) from ground to waist, along the floor, or with assistance. Able to stand, walk, lift, and bend for up to 8 hours per shift. Able to work in crowded and confined spaces.
    • Able to work safely with chemicals with reasonable safety accommodations.
    • Able to work in a loud environment.
    • Able to operate a pallet jack and material handling equipment safely.
    • Able to frequently climb stairs, ramps, and ladders.
    • Able to maintain excellent customer service and a high level of ethics while working under pressure.

    POSITION TYPE:

    35-45 Hours Per Week, Non-Exempt

    COMPENSATION:

    $22-30 per hour (based on qualifications and experience), plus benefits package
